Open source and licenses

Introduction

The free software movement, active since the early days of the computer era, was characterized by practically free distribution of software. The distribution of binaries only, and the impossibility of fixing bugs or developing new features, reinforced the need to distribute code under licenses capable of granting users freedom.

Software NEEDS a license.

Characteristics of an open source license:

• free redistribution,
• source code,
• derivative works,
• if integrity of the author’s source code is required, then use of patches,
• no discrimination against persons or groups,
• no discrimination against fields of use,
• distribution of the license,
• the license must not be specific to a product/distribution,
• the license must not contaminate other software,
• the license must be technologically neutral.

Licenses

Some open licenses:

• MIT
• GPL
• LGPL

Creative Commons

For artistic compositions of any kind, Creative Commons licenses are used with the following attributes:

• BY Attribution to the author is required,
• ND (NoDerivatives) Changes are not allowed,
• NC (NonCommercial) Only non-commercial uses are allowed,
• SA (ShareAlike) Derived works must be distributed under the same license.
